Pitchout: Friday September 23rd

We have a big 14-game slate tonight but there are not many trustworthy pitching options, so let’s dig in.

CASH GAME PLAYS

Danny Duffy- Duffy has a 26.6% K rate for the season and a 25% K rate vs. righties which compromise the majority of Detroit’s lineup. Duffy has averaged just over 17 points in his four starts against Detroit this season and would seem to be one of the safer plays of the evening.

Anthony Desclafani- Desclafani faces a Milwaukee team that leads the league in strikeout % against right handed pitching this season. For the season Desclafani has a 21.5% K rate and he posted eight K’s in six innings of work in his only start vs. Milwaukee.

James Paxton– Paxton faces a Twins tonight that has the fourth highest K% against left handed pitchers this season. The Twins should have a right handed heavy lineup tonight and that matchup sets up well for Paxton who fares better against right handed hitters striking them out at a 23.4% rate this year.

GPP PLAYS

Drew Pomeranz- Pomeranz is our top projected play of the day with the highest expected K rate. Pomeranz has been great in two starts vs. the Rays this season racking up 19 K’s in 12.2 innings. The reason it’s hard to trust Pomeranz for cash games is his recent performance has been pretty bad. Pomeranz is already at a career high in innings and he seems to be wearing down late in the season.

Jon Gray- Which Jon Gray is going to show up tonight? The one who threw a complete game shutout against the Padres with 16 K’s his last start or the one who struggled with his command and threw 87 pitches in four innings in his previous start also against the Padres. In his last nine starts Gray has four starts with over 24 DK points and five starts scoring under seven DK points.

Chris Archer- The good news for Archer is that he is pitching at home tonight where his ERA is nearly three runs better this season. The bad news is that he’s facing the Red Sox and their very good 18.1% K rate against righties. Archer always has 10 strikeout upside but he’s a risky GPP only option tonight.

Francisco Liriano – Liriano has been very good in his six starts with the Blue Jays striking out five batters or more in four of them. Although the Yankees do not strikeout much against lefties they also have a bottom 10 WOBA and ISO. If Liriano can navigate around Gary Sanchez tonight he could be in line for a nice start.

Trevor Bauer- Much like many of the other pitchers starting tonight Bauer has struggled mightily recently giving up five runs in each of his last three starts while failing to go six innings. The good news is his recent struggles have dropped his price down to $6300 on DK. In his last start at home against the White Sox he scored 27.55 DK points. Bauer has one of the highest upsides of the day for one of the cheapest prices.

Those are the main pitchers I’m looking at for tonight. Good luck in your contests!
